More funny things my kid said...

1. We're dog-sitting my folks dog and Maggie is helping.  She took him out on his leash and was walking him back towards the house when he took a little detour.  She looked back at him, rolled her eyes and thrust out her hip, and said, "Argh!  Mylo!  Hurry up, I don't want to be out here all day!"

2. Dressing Maggie in the morning, I had selected a pair of 3T pants that were way to big and said, "Oops, looks like these are too big!  You have a small butt."  To which she promptly replied (a little too promptly if you ask me), "Yeah, and you have a big butt!"

3. I was in the bathroom, and as usual had zero privacy.  My parent's small dog is visiting with us and he and Payton were in there with me.  I wasn't really paying attention to them when Maggie peeked around the doorway and said, "What are you two dogs doing?"  So I looked, and saw that they were having a little butt sniffing party.  Maggie told our visitor, "Mylo, Payton doesn't want to smell your stinky butt.  She only likes to smell Stevie's stinky butt because Stevie likes it and they are best friends."

4. Maggie found my trail mix, which is really more like a bag of various chocolate pieces than trail mix, and decided she needed to try some.  It had M&Ms.  So I told her she had to try all the pieces if I gave her some so as not to waste it.  As she was walking back to the family room with her snack I heard her mutter, "Hmmm, delicious... but different!"

September?

Seriously?  It's September 28th already?  Where did the last 28 days go?  Do you remember how the school year used to seem soooo long.  It was so hard to wait for summer vacation, and it was soooo long between homecoming and prom in high school.  Back then three months dating the same boy seemed like an eternity.  And then in college, the time between Friday nights started to fly by, but the time between the beginning of the semester and winter break still crawled.  Your first real job, first real apartment, first real shot at adulthood didn't seem all that different than childhood - but the clock started moving faster, birthday's came quicker.  Then before you know it you have a baby and now the clock is practically spinning off the wall... and then you have another baby and the clock just rocketed out the window!  I expect the next 18 years will be something like this - waking up each morning and realizing that it was not a day that past, but a whole month, or a whole year.  Does it slow down after the kids are out of the house?

Speaking of time flying, Catie has a few new developments to share.  She has a small but mighty vocabulary:  nigh-nigh, sister, mama, dada, dog, shoe, shirt, cheese, and a few others.  More exciting than that, she's finally walking!  Her official first steps were about two weeks ago, but as of today she can make it all the way across the kitchen.  She still favors crawling, but each day I see her rely a little more on her two little feet so I know it will be no time before she's running after her sister.  Right now she's standing in front of the fridge without support, pulling all the magnets off of her sister's artwork and saying "uh-oh" as they fall to the ground.  Only a mother could find such an act so utterly adorable.

Handy Helper

Today we took our annual trip to Royal Oak Apple Orchard in Harvard, IL.  We all really look forward to walking the rows of apples, searching for the perfect fruit for Mom's homemade applesauce.  After picking apples, riding the carousel, feeding the goats, eating lunch at the restaurant, and buying apple cider donuts at the shop, we were walking back to the car... and this is when my favorite moment of the day happened.  Maggie looked up at me, my arms laden with sweaters, diaper bag, shopping bag, cups of water from lunch, and she asked, "Mom?  Do you need a little help with that?  That stuff is all heavy, I can carry something."

I seriously almost started crying, it was just so sweet.  They were both so incredibly well behaved the entire time we were at the orchard, sweet and thoughtful, adorable and content.  Her saying that made me see the whole day, and just how pleasant every single moment of it was.   How often can you say that about your day?

Funny things my kid said...

So I was peeing last night, and Maggie was getting ready for her bath.  She stripped off her clothes and barged into the bathroom announcing, "I have to go potty!"  I said, "Well honey, I'll be done in just a minute then you can use the potty."  She looked thoughtful for a moment and said, "Well Mom, may I cut it?"

Well Travelled

We've been on vacation again. I know, I know, I think we're turning into Gypsies as well, but when the opportunity presents itself we just have to go, go, go! This time we were in northern Michigan. Started the trip with three days on Mackinac Island, which is so so cute. Maggie told me she wanted to live there and that it was her favorite place in the whole world... that was until we got to the next location of our vacation, Crystal Mountain Resort near Frankfort, Michigan. Crystal has a "fun pool"... a pool with a slide and climbing stuff, and sprayers, and it has an alpine slide, and bunk-beds. I think I probably could have locked Maggie in the room with the bunk-beds the entire weekend and she still would have had to be dragged out to the car kicking and screaming at the end of it. Bunk-beds are by far the best part of a three-year-olds vacation.
